Kalkan

Kalkan is a small resort and fishing village, nestled between the sea and the soaring Taurus Mountains. It has unrivalled charm and character. Formerly a Greek fishing village called Kalamaki, Kalkan’s main industries were fishing and olive growing. Kalkan was an important port during the 19th century and was populated by Greek and Turkish people. During the Turkish War of Independence in 1921, the exchange in population between the new Turkish Republic and Greece took place, during which time most of the Greek population living in Kalkan left Turkey, many settling on the nearby Greek island of Meis.

Today, the heart of Kalkan is its old town, a maze of narrow cobbled streets that wind down to the beach and harbour, home to both fishing boats and the elegant Turkish gulets that can be hired for lazy days out at sea. The streets are lined with whitewashed, shuttered buildings covered with bougainvilleas and intermingled with a wonderful array of shops that sell high quality Turkish goods.

Kalkan boasts a multitude of excellent rooftop and harbour side restaurants that offer top quality freshly cooked food. The village comes alive in the evenings, as the restaurants provide a perfect setting from which to admire the beautiful scenery and the shops offer no end of temptation until well after midnight!

Temperatures peak in Kalkan from the beginning of July to mid-August. However, the Meltern wind brings a welcome breeze to the scorching afternoons. Kalkan enjoys daytime temperatures in the 20s as early as March and as late as November. From November to April the weather is less predictable, but the cooler temperatures are often accompanied by sun, making it an ideal time to explore the area. The sea temperature rarely drops below 16C.

There is a weekly market at Kalkan that offers a variety of goods ranging from Turkish rugs, wooden backgammon boards, good quality leather and cotton goods to spice, cheese and Turkish Delight – haggling compulsory!

The beauty and immense charm of Kalkan, together with the weather and the friendliness of the local people, draw visitors back time and time again.

Kalkan has a small pebble beach, situated at the far end of the harbour. Jelly shoes recommended! It is a relaxing place to cool off in the clear water and watch the gulets return to harbour after a day’s cruising.

Kalkan is better known for its beach clubs – “rock gardens” cut into the hillside beside the sea, with platforms for sunbathing and relaxing and direct access into the clear Mediterranean Sea. Some offer water-sports including water-skiing, banana rides, ringos, jet ski and scuba diving. All have restaurant and bar facilities and provide a wonderful ambience in stunning settings. There are several beach clubs in Kalkan accessible by free boat services from the harbour and one in Kalamar Bay.
